Sassuolo Italy

Sassuolo (emiliano-romañolo, Sasôl) is an industrial city of 41,641 inhabitants in the province of Modena, 17 km south of the city of Modena, in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.It is part of the so-called comprehension delle ceramiche, an old-fashioned industrial complex that experienced a strong expansion after the Second War along the Secchia river valley. Its wealth comes from having been for decades the Italian and global center of tile production. However, it has been affected by the manufacture of cheaper tiles first in Spain and then in China. Since the fifties it has practically tripled its population thanks to the boom of the ceramic industry and immigration, first of Emiliano Apennines, then of southern Italy and in recent years abroad. Among its places of interest is the Ducal Palace of Sassuolo, finished and decorated in the 17th century as the summer residence of the Dukes of Este. Its architect was Bartolomeo Avanzini (1634) and the interior frescoes are by the French baroque painter Jean Boulanger, by Angelo M. Colonna and Agostino Mitelli. It has a large pool surrounded by false ruins called il fontanazzo. Also worth mentioning are the Sala della Fortuna, Camera dell'Amore, Camera delle Virtù estensi, Camera del Genio, as well as the Galleria and the Salone delle Guardie.
